The Start of Something Sweet

Today MESA ventured to neighboring properties looking for mature maple to tap at a future date. ID'ing maple trees in the winter can be a challenge, but thankfully Corrie of Saphound had already given the students the tools needed.

The maple trees had to be about 10" in diameter, so armed with just measuring tape the students had to rely on good ole fashion math. After finding the circumference, the students had to divide by Pi to get the diameter. From there, students recorded the location of the maple tree as well as mark it with flagging tape. Thanks to Dick and Cathy, and Cindy and Don for letting us tap their maple trees.
