The things we haven't posted and the Oscars

posted Jun 11, 2018, 6:12 PM by Jotham Oliver   [ updated Jun 11, 2018, 6:16 PM ]

MESA students have been busy going to the Portland Museum of Science, canoeing the Saco, and summiting Mount Washington by motor coach.

But we also had our Oscar ceremony for our students' reflective documentaries. The students' work aligns with many ELA standards: speaking, persuasive writing, editing and more. See below for our awards ceremony.

The Music of MOS

It was great to hear the concert this morning. Hats off to all the hard work of the band and chorus members. Some MESA students were apart of today's concert. Photo permissions negated the possibility of getting pics of everyone, but here's a sample:

Scarborough Marsh with Chris Lewey

posted Apr 25, 2018, 6:46 PM by Jotham Oliver

What a great day. We were able to get a good look at migratory birds, some of which had come up from Central Brazil. Chris Lewey was amazing with our students and was able to give them a time they will not forget for some time.

Mount Tom, Tin Mountain, and MESA

posted Apr 14, 2018, 7:52 AM by Jotham Oliver

Awesome blue sky day as MESA ascended Mount Tom in Fryeburg to discuss mountain weather. Are temps at the top different than the base? Obviously yes, but why? What about wind? What about snow cover?

Finishing up our Maple Sugaring Findings

posted Apr 14, 2018, 7:50 AM by Jotham Oliver

Large thanks to Corrie Blodgett of SapHound Maple Company for coming back and wrapping up our maple sugaring unit. The students did a great job conveying to her their findings. Corrie was too kind and brought everyone a bottle of syrup and a customizable label.

Thanks again to the Perloffs

Very nice for Dave and Sandy to visit us today and talk all things 3D...3D printing that is. They gave us some tips on how to print more efficiently, as well as some more ideas on different avenues to explore.

Great to have Laurie Flood of the Maine DEP come down and give our students a lesson on ocean acidification and its effects on marine wildlife.

Mountain Top Weather with Mike Dufilho of TMCC

posted Apr 5, 2018, 2:29 PM by Jotham Oliver

Great day today at TMCC. MESA students should be able to tell you why mountain tops receive more precipitation than the valleys below, get more wind, and why its air temperatures are cooler.

Saphound Maple Company

Saphound Maple Company has been an invaluable member of the MESA family this year. Corrie has visited our School multiple times educating our students on the how and why of maple sugaring. Lecturing. Yes. But even going so far as to have us tap trees on neighboring property, too (thanks Dick and Kathy).
